In the Foundation level, you will learn to teach the pre-Pilates exercises, fundamentals, beginnings, and endings as well as modifications and building blocks. The focus is on control, centering, basic breathing and spinal decompression, and working from the Powerhouse out. Alignment and becoming aware of imbalances and resulting compensations are also key in this level. Exercises are simple and good for most populations. This level is safe when taught appropriately with modifications for back issues, hip problems, elderly, and pregnant women. Successfully completing Mat Foundation is necessary to continue with further Mat courses or to begin training on Apparatus.

Understand the Foundation exercises and learn to teach traditional Beginner level Mat exercises. The focus is on how to challenge and deepen connections, alignment, and kinesthetic awareness, and to integrate breathing more into the exercises. You will discover how to incorporate traditional small hand weights and contemporary leg weights as well as non-traditional accessories such as the Swiss ball and foam roller. These work to challenge proprioception, the Powerhouse, symmetry, and gravitational relationships to external space and the body.

Like Mat Foundation, Reformer Foundation focuses on strengthening the muscles from the shoulder girdle to the pelvic girdle, with the most attention given to the Powerhouse. We concentrate on getting the body used to working in proper alignment, allowing us to identify imbalances and compensations and remove them.

The range of exercises taught here develop basic vertical alignment from head to toes, but are still simple, allowing clients to concentrate on the most important point: core stability. This level is most often used for clients who may have physical limitations due to past injuries or other on-going issues. Both traditional and contemporary exercises are taught with this idea in mind.

This level delves into more traditional exercises for the Beginner level client aimed at deepening the basic knowledge of Pilates and the Reformer developed in the Foundation level. The vocabulary of exercises increases, but the focus is still specific to large muscle groups and core stability.

We begin to emphasize the importance of breathing more and transitions to create fluidity between exercises. In Reformer level 1 we are still working with closed kinesthetic chains; all limbs are in straps, or controlled. The knowledge of exercises that you will obtain in this level will allow you to begin working more with individual needs and addressing imbalances and asymmetries.

This course introduces Intermediate Level exercises mostly for healthy and athletic clientele. The exercises are more complex, so the mind becomes more involved and integrated in exercise, and the whole body system and nervous system are used; as such, precision and rhythm are heavily emphasized in this level. The focus is on strengthening the shoulder girdle and doing more work on the arms, with the center of gravity removed from the floor. There are also more inverted positions, working more distally to the Powerhouse. Here, kinesthetic chains open up. Training in this level provides you with the knowledge to adapt to the individual needs of athletes, dancers, and other healthy people who want to work specific muscle groups.

The highest level of Reformer is quite challenging and is for advanced, healthy, athletic, and coordinated clients. The exercises are complex and demanding, working small muscle groups and frequently involving inversion. The primary focuses here are complete body alignment, fluidity of movement, and precision. Ideally, the body works organically as one unit to perform exercises.

The Foundation level focuses on building the Powerhouse, centering the body, and performing
exercises with control, with an end goal of core stabilization. It is important here to identify imbalances and resulting compensations in the body so that the client is aware of them and can work on them. Exercises use a small ROM and are core-centered.

This level deepens the basic Pilates knowledge of the Cadillac/Tower and covers mostly traditional exercises at the Beginner level. The focus is on working transitions and developing the Powerhouse and proprioception by asking clients to adapt to various positions using multidirectional outside forces. This is a good level for rehabilitation because both apparatus are stable; the Cadillac has pieces which provide additional support and can move clients in safe ranges of motion without overextending them. The additional support also helps clients to continue to work on fixing imbalances and compensations in the body.

Education Outcomes:

  • Learning Exercises

Here, vocabulary increases to suit Intermediate level clients. The focus is on strengthening the shoulder girdle (distal from Powerhouse), increasing precision, and performing exercises more rhythmically. Decompression of the body’s major joints is also important here. There are more suspended positions, and the increased knowledge of the Cadillac you will gain means more programming choices for you. You will learn coordinated exercises that focus on many muscle groups beyond the Powerhouse and which adapt well to the individual needs of athletic clients.

This level uses basic standing, seated, and prone positions to challenge the body’s ability to stabilize against mobilization of isolated body parts. It develops the Powerhouse and stability through controlled mobility. It’s a good tool for anyone with compensation issues or poor limb and core alignment, specifically in the hips, knees, and ankles. Most exercises that you learn in this level will use extra support from attached handles, a board behind the back in High-Low chairs, and supporting arms and legs.

In this level we remove the added support of small apparatus and supporting hands and legs so that clients are reliant on their own balance and strength. The exercises become more complex, with less surface contact, and the body moves more with frequent rotations and twists. The focus is on challenging the body’s perception of where its center of gravity is in space; it must constantly adapt to remain centered while in motion. This course is an excellent preparation for working with athletic, coordinated clients seeking variation and challenge.

Education Outcomes:

  • Learning Exercises
  • Practice teaching
  • Intelligent programming
  • Going deeper with individual needs

This course introduces exercises using the baby arch, which is very accessible to the general public because of its small size and can easily be integrated into mat classes. It also brings in slightly more challenging exercises on the spine corrector. These require more flexibility and strength because of the size of the apparatus, but its structure, which includes a small seat, also opens it up to a variety of exercises in sitting, ventral (prone), dorsal (supine) and side positions that challenge the body in a different way. Additionally in this course, the Ladder Barrel is introduced which provides another variety and range of exercises due its height and ladder. You can hook to the ladder while working with the barrel. All of these develop flexibility in the spine and chest and strength in the abdominals, hips, psoas and buttocks.

  • Learning Exercises

  • Planning a class with individual needs
